Lanark Cedar is honoured to have joined in a partnership with Scouts Canada in their Scoutrees program. Scoutrees is a national environmental program that involves youth (Beaver, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers) in a meaningful and hands –on conservation project. This program provides an educational and fundraising opportunity for the boys and girls within our local Scouting programs as they plant trees.
On May 3rd, 2008 the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers the scouting youth of the Valley Highland Area, which include groups from, Perth, Drummond, Port Elmsley, Carleton Place, Beckwith, Almonte, Smith Falls and Merrickville will be planting another 3,300 tree seedlings on the municipal property adjacent to the Drummond/North Elmsley landfill site. This planting will create a buffer zone (beautification) along the Code Road and will also contribute to carbon-neutral initiatives/efforts.
After the tree planting the scouting youth will arrive at Lanark Cedar for a well earned BBQ. The BBQ is also part of a fundraising effort that is organized by the Valley Highland (Scouts Canada) Area Committee. Please come and join us and support a good cause.

Environmental Commitment
In response to the concern surrounding forest sustainability the concept of forest certification arose. The ideas were to develop a process for certifying forest management practices to a pre-determined set of standards which define sustainable forest management. Independent third party auditors evaluate forest operations to determine whether owners and/or managers meet the required standards. Forest certification ensures that forest owners, practitioners, and operators comply with established and accepted management standards. Certification provides assurance to forest owners, managers, operators, consumers, and the local community that the production of wood products from a certified land base does not damage the overall health of the forest, the stability of the ecosystems, or the livelihoods of local communities. Forest certification is a voluntary market based concept.
The forest stewardship council (FSC) is an international association of environmental and social groups, the timber trade, workers, indigenous peoples’ organizations, responsible businesses, and community forestry groups from around the world. It is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization formed to support environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management around the world through the certification of forest management practices.
